Emergency Department

Northside Medical Center’s Emergency Department

A trip to the emergency department is never planned – it happens when you least expect it. The Emergency Department (ED) at Northside Medical Center, designated a Category I (Comprehensive) service, is equipped to provide a wide range of emergency services for patients of all ages.

The ED at Northside Medical Center is:

  • open 24 hours day, seven days a week, 365 days a year
  • equipped to handle all types of emergencies
  • staffed by board-certified ED Physicians
  • a Level III Trauma Center
  • a Certified Primary Stroke Center
  • a Certified Chest Pain Center with PCI

The ED is fully integrated with other Northside Medical departments, including Radiology, Laboratory, Respiratory Therapy, Social Services, Pharmacy, IV Therapy, Pastoral Care, and Patient Representation. The hospital’s Digital Imaging department supports the ED with computed tomography (CT) scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cardiac imaging and ultrasound.

Northside Medical Center’s ED is a vital partner with the surrounding community, including aspects of emergency management and preparedness. The clinical nurse manager serves as the liaison between the hospital and the emergency medical services community, and works closely with Mahoning County Disaster Services Agency.

Emergencies and Continuity of Care

Our doctors specialize in emergency medicine, caring for patients with acute illnesses or injuries that require immediate medical attention. Because patients with the greatest need must receive immediate care, a registered nurse will assess all patients and prioritize them on the basis of need, not on the order of arrival. Once the emergency is resolved, we recommend you follow up with your primary care provider to reassess your overall health.

A primary care doctor enhances your long-term health by managing your care over an extended period of time, called continuity of care. If non-urgent conditions are routinely treated in the ED, your primary care doctor may not have all the necessary information to ensure your continuity of care.

Ongoing Improvement

Northside Medical Center’s ED regularly undergoes performance improvement activities to evaluate various aspects of performances and procedures, including standard of care reviews. Based on the review results, improvements are undertaken as needed to improve the delivery of patient care both within the ED and throughout other hospital departments.
